Those are three things you probably wouldn’t associate together, huh? Well, I had the opportunity to spend some time this summer in Alaska with my boyfriend and his daughter. It’s our chance the get out of the hot, hot South Carolina heat; enjoy beautiful wildlife, and spectacular scenery.
The town we go to offers a lot of activities for its youth over the summer and we had an opportunity to join a group going on a three day backpacking expedition. Back home we enjoy “convenient camping” – you know – set up the tent near the car, pack coolers and tons of food, and bring lots of stuff. So for us this was a lifetime opportunity to hike and camp in the backwoods. We took a boat ride to a remote state park trail, hiked in several miles carrying packs with all our food and gear, spent three days in the woods volunteering to help keep a portion of the trails clear of overgrown brush, and then hiked several miles out for another boat ride back home.
This was a spur of the moment decision and we had a day to get our gear together before our venture. For both of us it was a truly unique and magnificent experience. For this trip we had to be in shape. We had to be strong enough to carry backpacks filled with food, our tent, sleeping bags, and other camping gear. We had to be fit enough to hike miles of the rugged trails in and out of our spot and up and down the mountain switchback trails. Being strong and having endurance were requirements for this trip.
One of the reasons why I exercise is so that I can live life to the fullest and enjoy opportunities like this. Had I been overweight and out of shape, this trip and opportunity would not be possible. I didn’t have time to train, plan or prepare, it was a yes, let’s go decision. My consistent fitness routine allowed me to take advantage of this opportunity and enjoy some unique and memorable girl time and scenery. No hesitation. That’s being able to live life to me. Keeping my health as a priority so I can have fun like this is a huge motivator for me. Being able to make a decision based on what I want to do, not what I can and can’t do. I’d love to know what opportunities being fit has allowed you to take advantage of, or what opportunities you look forward to.
